The Backpack With Room for Love — Family Reading Guide
A gentle conversation guide for caring adults reading with children ages 5–9. Let children choose how much they want to share.
Before reading
Find a quiet moment together. Explain that all feelings are welcome, and that a child never has to solve a grown-up problem.
Talk together
- What would you pack to help you feel comfortable in a different home?
- What feelings did you notice as Nora moved between homes?
- Who is a trusted adult you can ask for help?
- What helps you remember you are loved when you miss someone?
A small activity
Draw a backpack and fill it with pictures of comforting things, trusted people, and words of love. The child can keep this picture wherever it feels helpful.
A prayer for changing days
Dear God, thank You for loving us on happy days and hard days. Help us speak honestly, ask for comfort, and care for one another. Amen.
For caring adults
Remind children that divorce is not their fault. Avoid asking them to choose sides, carry messages between adults, or promise that their parents will reunite. Listen with patience and make space for mixed feelings.
